Why did you leave me here alone?

Why did you leave me here alone?

Before my grandfather passed away, he was in the hospital, expecting the night to go by so he could go home the following day. My grandmother arranged everything necessary to make that possible. Just a few more hours, and we would bring him back home.

The flat my grandparents rented was a one-bedroom with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom on the parterre level.
Each of the rooms was reachable in just a few steps. I slept between my grandparents. Bedtime during the week is 9:00 pm. My grandfather also went to bed at 9:00 pm. My grandmother stayed up until the last news was broadcast, which was usually around 1.30. No programs were aired after that.

My grandfather had a ritual. Nightly at 11:00 pm, he would get up from bed, go to the kitchen, warm up the leftovers from the day, sit by the window facing the road, and eat. After he had finished eating, he would head to the bathroom. On his way, and he would stand by the door to the living room, where my grandmother was sitting with her back turned to the door, where my grandfather was standing. She was facing the TV. He would stand there for a short time, then continue on to the bathroom before going back to bed.

With the thought in mind, a few more hours, and Grandpa was back home. I went to bed. Shortly after, the phone rang. It had been very unusual that anyone phoned my grandmother at this time, except it had been an emergency. The hospital had called. We had to visit the hospital. The next moment, I was sitting in a taxi beside my grandmother, and thus the next moment, I was sitting on a chair in a hospital. I was unsure what was happening, but it didn’t feel right, and Grandma was acting differently from me as I knew her.

The nurse recommended leaving me outside. I said: “I don’t want to stay here. Please, Grandma, I wish to go with you.” I begged her. “Don’t leave me here. “She looked at me for a quick moment, then said, “Come, let’s see Grandpa. We entered the room where he was lying. I saw a bed covered with a massive white sheet. My Grandma and a nurse were lifting the sheet. I was standing behind them, still unsure of what had happened to my grandfather.

I wanted to see Grandpa. I stepped to the side and saw, for the first time ever tears running down my grandmother’s face. I heard her ask Grandpa. “Why have you ever left me?”

Why did you leave me here back alone? She started to cry. I could feel tears filling my eyes. I was crying too. Grandma gave Grandpa a goodbye kiss. I wanted to say " goodbye," to Grandpa, but suddenly, a freezing field stopped me. This energy field wasn't new to me, but I could not explain it now. I just knew that it had time to travel.
Sadly, we left. It had been horrible. Grandma cried the rest of the night In-front of the TV, and I didn't move from her side.

The following days seemed to pass slowly. Life went on. We were back, and it was time to go to bed. Grandma stayed up as usual. Shortly after I fell asleep, I needed to go to the bathroom. I wanted to make my way out of bed until I heard steps in the direction bathroom. I listened to the bathroom door open and shut.

I waited patiently for the toilet to flush and thus the door to open. Well, the bathroom toilet flushed, but the door didn’t open. I waited and waited, but I needed to go. So, I got out of bed and quickly walked in the direction toilet, shouting out, Grandma, I would like to go to the bathroom.

Are you finished? I reached the closed bathroom door and turned my head to the right side toward the living room where my grandmother, to my surprise, was sitting with her back to the door where I was standing, facing the TV. I felt how my hair lifts in the air, and a cold shiver of fear shot through my body.

“Grandma”, I said. “I assumed you were on in the bathroom”. Without turning her head from the TV, she said: I believe you went to the bathroom.” “No,” I said. That creeped me even more out at that moment. My grandmother turned her face to me, looked at me for a moment, and replied, that was grandpa, coming home and checking on us before he goes.

Well, that didn’t make me feel better. I just hurried to go to the bathroom and defiantly not back to bed.
